{"id":2959,"date":"2021-02-11T10:10:23","date_gmt":"2021-02-11T10:10:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ascef.com\/?p=2959"},"modified":"2021-02-12T10:14:32","modified_gmt":"2021-02-12T10:14:32","slug":"succession-family-business-tous","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ascef.com\/en\/succession-family-business-tous\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Succession should be addressed with care, not out of improvisation or emotional impulses&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Succession is a sensitive moment in any organization, since it is intended to ensure the continuity and development of the legacy maintaining a balance among family, ownership and business.\u00a0 With this proposition, the <u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ascef.com\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Catalonian Family Business Association (ASCEF)<\/strong><\/a><\/u>, organized a conference entitled &#8220;Family Businesses Before the Succession Challenge&#8221;, with the collaboration of the <u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ceu.es\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>University of Abad Oliva CEU<\/strong><\/a><\/u> and the participation of <u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tous.com\/gb-en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>TOUS<\/strong><\/a><\/u> Corporate Vice-president, Rosa Tous.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<strong><em>Succession is a sensitive moment and needs to be addressed with care and not out out of improvisation or emotional impulses<\/em><\/strong><em>. It should be well prepared, for it is a process, where strategy, organization and governance must converge<\/em>&#8220;, explained Amadeu Jori, <strong>ASCEF<\/strong> President. &#8220;<em>Their main actors are not only the person leaving the position and the one succeeding him, but also the rest of the members of the stock holding family<\/em>&#8220;, he added.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Camen Ruiz-Vi\u00f1al and Dr. Ferando \u00c1lvarez-G\u00f3mez, director and subdirector respectively of the Department of Family Business and Company Creation of the University of Abad Oliva CEU, presented the report <u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ascef.com\/en\/family-businesses-succession\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><em>&#8220;Spanish Family Businesses Before the Succession Challange&#8221;<\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/u>, prepared along with other researchers members of international consortium <u><a href=\"https:\/\/thestepproject.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>STEP Project<\/strong><\/a><\/u> (<em>Successful Transgenerational Entrepreneurship Practices<\/em>), where it was noted, among other figures, that 70% of the today&#8217;s family businesses acknowledge not having a succession plan.<\/p>\n<p>According to this study&#8217;s data, most of CEOs are baby boomers, 24% are women and 45% belong to the company&#8217;s second generation.\u00a0 Dr. \u00c1lvarez-G\u00f3mez underscored that &#8220;<em><strong>succession plans prevent situations of conflict in the future<\/strong><\/em>&#8220;. However, he indicated that there is &#8220;<em>a limited proactivity<\/em>&#8221; in most businesses since &#8220;<em>the business leader is expected to reach an age close to retirement<\/em>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Dr. Ruiz-Vi\u00f1al thought that the COVID-19 pandemic &#8220;<em>has entailed an acceleration in family business succession processes<\/em>&#8220;.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 She also added that <em>millennials are increasingly being taken into consideration, since the pandemic has also accelerated businesses digitalization<\/em>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2950\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2950\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2950 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ascef.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/web2-650x480.jpeg\" alt=\"Successi\u00f3: ASCEF - UAO CEU\" width=\"650\" height=\"480\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2950\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr. Carmen Ruiz-Vi\u00f1al, during the session<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>TOUS Corporate Vice-president, Rosa Tous, took part in the conference &#8220;The Great Challenges of Family Business, moderated by Dr. Juan Corona, Academic Advisor for the <u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iefamiliar.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Business Family Institute<\/strong><\/a><\/u>. Tous, who explained that fourth generation family members have started to enter the business, underscored that &#8220;<em><strong>in the family business, we want to build to endure<\/strong><\/em>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p>Tous indicated that, once the second to third generation succession was planned in 2008, &#8220;<em>we set up a family council with the intention of working on behavioral matters involved in being a family business member, knowing that we have three roles: family, stock-holder and business executive<\/em>&#8220;. &#8220;<em>It is important to know how to interact within the company, differently as in family reunions, being aware that this involves a learning process<\/em>&#8220;, Rosa Tous added.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2945\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2945\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2945 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ascef.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/web3-650x480.jpeg\" alt=\"Rosa Tous -
